Located in Sydney’s Balmain suburb, the Screen House is a single story cottage that has been renovated and extended by Carterwilliamson Architects to increase square footage and to bring more daylight inside. The existing house was dark and had too many level changes to make sense, so the architects created a single floor that was level to the garden.

The transition between the old and new house features a garden courtyard that’s accessed by large sliding glass doors that allow both light and air into the first floor.

The home gets its name from the custom perforated black screens that were designed from one of the clients’ photographs. The screens create a degree of separation while also allowing a new way for light to filter in.
Throughout the house, warm wood tones are paired with black surfaces and accents for a clean and cozy aesthetic.

The open living space faces the rear of the house and opens up to the back garden. The wide stairs lead to a terrace above the garage which features perforated screens that add a layer of privacy.

Juxtaposing the wood and black in the rest of the house is this unforgettable bathroom!

And then this jaw-dropping bathroom covered in matte black penny tiles!
