Aayutha dining table and Kelir chair by Amitha Madan and Agrim Singhal for Magari
Dezeen Showroom: the Aayutha dining table and Kelir chair by Amitha Madan and Agrim Singhal for Magari put a contemporary twist on traditional low-seated dining.
Madan and Singhal's Aayutha collection draws on Tamil history and culture, particularly the Sangam period from 400BCE, a time of flourishing in India that birthed the Tamil script.
The Kelir dining chair has contemporary touches
The script's distinctive mix of fluidity and geometry inspires the collection, which is anchored around the Aayutha dining table.
The table honours the historic stone-carving art from Mamallapuram with its juxtaposition of a polished black slab tabletop and roughly textured, grey granite legs.
The Aayutha table contrasts two textures of stone
The low-seated table enables the tradition of sitting on the ground ? a sign of simplicity and togetherness. But the collection introduces a contemporary minimalist look with brass details in addition to the traditional materials of stone and wood. This is especially evident in the Kelir chairs, which pair with the Aayutha table. Along with the brass touches, the chairs feature a woven leather and paper cord backrest for a luxury finish, and hidden wheels for easy manoeuvring.

"The Aayutha collection is a true medley of community-based crafts with modern-day practices," said Magari.
