Start of construction for Haikou Tower South
Hainan, China ? October 2016: Construction has started on Haikou Tower South, which lies in the new business quarter of the South China city of Haikou and is due to be completed by 2020.
At 428 m high, it is the tallest building on the island and marks the heart of the new central business district. The tower, along with green shapes and water, frames an expansive plaza alongside the Eastern Guo Xing Road, which is the main east-west axis of the city.
The form and structure of the tower are determined by the room schedule and an efficient loadbearing structure. Eight inclined mega-columns along the perimeter rotate around the central core and converge with one another at acute angles. Diagonal struts carry wind loads and torsional forces, forming rhomboid shapes in the facade.
