The Grand Canyon is a splendid and steep gorge carved by the Colorado River in northern Arizona, United States, near the border of Utah and Nevada. It is located mostly within the Grand Canyon National Park, one of the first wilderness parks in the United States.
The Colorado River channel carries water from seven states, undermining the ground for millions of years. It is about 450 km long, with ranges of between 6 and 29 km wide and reaches depths of over 1,600 m. Due to its importance to ecology, biology, culture and the beauty of its landscape, it was declared a National Park in 1919 and a World Heritage Site in 1979 by the UNESCO.
The Grand Canyon has three main areas. The South Rim is the most developed of these three areas. It is the one that largest range of accommodation offers, both inside and outside the National Park. On the other hand, in the North Rim are two major areas of accommodation, the lodges which are within the park, and the area outside the park with a few hotels.
