Born in Christchurch, New Zealand the Cardboard House that follows has been built for the soul of the community and it was designed by architecture legend Shigeru Ban, a Cardboard Cathedral that replaces the city`s iconic Anglican Cathedral erected in 1864, brought down in 2011 by an earthquake.

The new volume has an expected lifespan of 50 years, sufficient time for a temporary establishment that precedes a more permanent structure. The simple A-frame structure uses 98 cardboard tubes of equal size to form the earthquake-proof form. Shigeru Ban used recycled tubes several times before as an emergency relief building material successfully. The architect further relates :  ?The strength of the building has nothing to do with the strength of the material. Even concrete buildings can be destroyed by earthquakes very easily, but paper buildings cannot.? Apart from its strong technical advantages, the church also welcomes the visitors with a colorful mosaic made of triangular glass etched with images from the original cathedral?s facade.
