Matt Gibberd combined his passion for contemporary architecture with his editorial experience, to launch design-led estate agency The Modern House. He reveals how in this interview for the Dezeen Jobs careers guide.
A successful start in the publishing sector saw Gibberd joining The World of Interiors magazine as an intern, eventually progressing during his five year stint at the publication to senior editor.
Joining forces with Wallpaper's design editor Albert Hill, the pair saw an opportunity for aesthetically-led real estate, launching The Modern House in 2005, to add "an editorial sensibility to a staid industry".
The duo have spent the past 14 years working to reimagine the "mechanics behind the sale process", with Gibberd revealing starting their own property firm allowed them to "have a cultural impact and to create a marketplace for design-led housing that didn't previously exist in the UK".
?We believe in design as a powerful force for good," he said, explaining how a shared education in art history has helped both co-founders shape the brand. "We both have a passion for art and it permeates everything we do," he said.
Asked to describe the working culture at The Modern House, Gibberd revealed "we work hard to make the best possible working environment".
