Competition: win an Eames RAR rocking chair from Vitra
We have teamed up with Luisaviaroma for our latest competition, which offers readers the chance to win a rocking armchair designed by Charles and Ray Eames.
The RAR ? short for rocking armchair rod base ? is widely recognised as a classic in the history of modern furniture design.
We're offering one reader the chance to win a version produced by furniture brand Vitra, featuring a white plastic seat and maple rockers.
The RAR is a classic in the history of modern furniture design
Modernist designers Charles and Ray Eames designed their now iconic moulded plastic chairs in 1948 for a competition hosted by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, which sought ideas for well-designed, moderately priced furnishing for the masses.
The modernist chair, with its changeable base and optional armrests, was praised for its adaptability and awarded second prize. The first rocking version was made available in 1950, produced by Zenith Plastics and distributed by Herman Miller.
The Eames' updated the design the same year, adding the criss-crossing wire configuration found on today's RAR chairs.
We're giving away a version with a white plastic seat and maple rockers
Today the RAR is largely unchanged from the 1950 version. It is produced by Vitra in a variety of colour and finish combinations.
The rocking chair we're giving away comes with a chrome-plated wire base, joining its maple rockers with its white-dyed polypropylene seat.
