Located on Vancouver’s Oak Street, Congregation Beth Israel is undergoing an intensive redevelopment of its existing synagogue and site. To date, the renewal and addition has provided 26,000sf (2415sm) of worship; 41,500sf (3855sm) of new spaces; and a 200-stall underground parkade. A later phase of the project will see a new 4-storey office development on the site. A carefully articulated network of shared landscaping and courtyards join the existing and proposed facilities, which target LEED Gold. Construction systems include long span glulam beams, open-web steel joists, concrete block, tilt-up concrete sandwich panels, Jerusalem stone, glazed curtain wall, coloured glass and onyx. © Michael Elkan
