The Autonomous house sits on a cliff of a 27-hectare block overlooking the ocean and the town of Byron Bay, taking advantage of its location through a cantilevered design and forming a ?U? shaped plan in order to maximise the space and create several separate outdoor areas.
These spaces were designed in order to allow the residents to occupy each of these areas according to the season, having two north-facing decks to occupy in winter with eastern and western aspects and an outdoor south-facing courtyard for summer mornings and afternoons and windier periods. The residence comprises 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living / dining room and an open plan kitchen, and is made up of two bedroom wings, with easterly and westerly aspect, respectively, separating the parents? wing from the kids?, thus creating privacy and space for the occupants. The layout ensures that every room enjoys a view, even the bathrooms.
The underlying principles of the design were to create a modern, autonomous house which generates its own power, collects its own water, and deals with its own waste on site. This is a house which capitalizes on the views of the Byron hinterland while also being re...
