Fashion x Architecture: Zaha Hadid’s Modern H-Line Hat Design
The late architect Zaha Hadid?s eponymous firm may be best known for its sinuous, futuristic buildings, but it?s no stranger to the world of industrial design and fashion. In addition to architecture, the firm regularly dabbles in the creation of extraordinary furniture, garments, shoes, and personal accessories, all of them reflecting Hadid?s signature aesthetic. The latest in a line of objects that look like they teleported here from a distant future is the H-Line hat, a cool blue and white topper inspired by the firm?s own 520 West 28th Street residential building, which itself overlooks New York City?s elevated High Line park.
A high-end condo tower in Manhattan’s desirable Chelsea neighborhood, 520 West 28th takes inspiration from the industrial character of the area’s past in the form of its brushed steel facade. The 3D-printed nylon hat draws from these patterns and shapes, boasting a rounded white crown and a dramatically angled and folded brim perforated with diagonal cutouts. Its colors suggest reflections of clouds and sky in the building?s swooping metallic window frames. The H-Line Hat celebrates Friends of the High Line?s ongoing commitment to their community, the designers explain. They designed it in honor of a “Hat Party on the High Line” put on by the organization, which required guests to don elaborate headgear.
