The challenge was to bring two very different disciplines together as Jazz music works with improvisation and serendipity while architecture seaks to avoid random and tries to plan and fix things.
The second question was how to integrate a new building into the grown city structure of the old town in Basel. Historic plans are showing that the outlines of the buildings on the site didn’t change much over the centuries. Believing in the “architecture trouvée”, the new building was created on the footprint of the old.
Its interior circulation is organized around a central courtyard which leads to various paths and manifold random meetings rather than short, effective ways in a complex building. The intention was to create a course inside the building which starts at the rehearsal rooms where you practice almost privately, continues in the hallways where you meet other people and culminates in the courtyard where many people interact.
As there wasn’t a space programme of the building at the start, the specific needs of the school and the musicians had to be found out. A survey revealed that there is no such thing as the perfect rehearsal room. Some people prefer to play in churches, others ...
