Jean-Louis Cohen receives Honorary Doctorate
French architect, professor, curator and architectural historian Jean-Louis Cohen has received an honorary doctorate from the Université de Montréal. The degree was bestowed at the Faculty of Planning?s graduation ceremony this fall.

Cohen?s research focuses on nineteeth and twentieth century architecture and urbanism in Germany, France, Italy, Russia, and North America, as well as contemporary issues in architecture, planning, and landscape. He is currently the Sheldon H. Solow Professor in the History of Architecture at New York University?s Institute for Fine Arts. He has authored some thirty books, and curated exhibitions on the history of modern architecture for the world?s largest museums.
?The written word is crucial for architectural culture, which is constituted by both buildings and printed books?for both architects or critics. Many architects work by creating a spatial and verbal idea, with each feeding the other,? said Cohen. ?Without theoretical and historical thinking and culture, architecture would be nothing but the coldest of buildings.? ?During the course of his extraordinary career, Mr. Cohen has done much, including directing the architectural research program of the French government.
