5468796 Architecture has announced that principal and founding partner Johanna Hurme is among the four women shortlisted for the Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture.
Hosted by The Architectural Review, this esteemed international award is presented annually to women who are using innovative architecture to effect social change. The Moira Gemmill prize comes with a £10,000 fund and recognizes talented architects under the age of 45. It is named in memory for the late Moira Gemmill, director of design at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and a committed believer in the transformative power of architecture and a champion for emerging talent and equity in the practice. This award aims to inspire change in the architectural profession by celebrating great design by women architects and promoting role models for young women in practice. As a conceptual and design innovator, Hurme?s work includes a full range of projects and public initiatives including the Crossroads Garden Shed in Calgary, Winnipeg?s 62M Housing and Old Market Square Stage, The Forks Railside Masterplan, Table for 12 and 1200 dinners, Migrating Landscapes (Canada?s official entry to the 13th annual Venice Biennale), and Chair Your Idea, a crowdsourced and crowdfunded idea competition celebrating urban design. Her firm, 5468796 Architecture, won a 2016 Canadian Architect Award of Merit for its project, Brewery at the Forks.
