Laurentian University hosting Métis Architecture and Design Symposium
On Thursday, March 15, Laurentian University’s McEwen School of Architecture will host the one-day Métis Architecture and Design Symposium.
The all-day Sudbury, ON event will open with a Smudging Ceremony and Prayer at 8:30 am, followed by opening remarks from McEwen School of Architecture director David Fortin, and a greeting from architect Étienne Gaboury.
A forum on Métis cultural expression, featuring prominent members of Canada’s creative Métis community. Elder Juliette Denis will be joined in a discussion by dancer Yvonne Chartrand, while a second talk will feature artist David Garneau and poet and author Gregory Scofield. The two discussions will be followed by a talk on ‘Designing a Northern Ontario Métis Home.’ The mid-day talk will feature Métis Elder and canoe builder Marcel Labelle and architect Roch Belair. In the early afternoon, another pair of discussions on Métis design will bring together Métis architectural student Jason Surkan and Métis intern architect Tiffany Shaw-Collinge. The second Métis design discussion will feature architects Rachelle Lemieux and Shawn Bailey. Later, a video lecture by Douglas Cardinal will be followed by a Sharing Circle ? moderated by Dani Kastelein ? featuring the Gabriel Dumont Institute’s Karon Shmon.
