Horno3: Museo del Acero, Monterrey
Horno3 10 year anniversary
Location: Parque Fundidora, Mexico
Architect: Grimshaw
It has been 10 years since one of Grimshaw?s most esteemed projects opened its doors; Horno3: Museo del Acero in Monterrey, Mexico. Over the past decade it has become a popular learning centre for science and technology, and stands tall as a monument to the city?s industrial heritage.
To celebrate the history of this project and the people who were so much a part of it, architects Grimshaw have produced a short film to capture the story.

Designed in and around Horno Alto #3, Museo del Acero is one of three original blast furnaces in Monterrey?s Parque Fundidora. Grimshaw adapted the building to create a world-class museum, adding 97,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor exhibition space comprising a historical steel gallery; contemporary steel gallery; ‘Furnace Show’ exhibit; teaching rooms; and a restaurant.
Exploring the possibilities of steel is a key design feature, and the tessellated roof over the steel gallery demonstrates how steel sheet material can be transformed into structurally rigid forms by complex faceting.
A centrepiece of the museum is the striking yellow helical steel...
