On May 18th, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced the winners of the 2018 Housing Awards. This year’s 11 recipients include a variety of single-family and multi-family residences ranging from small infill homes to full residential colleges at Yale University. The awards span four categories: One- and Two-Family Custom Residences, One- and Two-Family Production Homes, Multifamily Housing, and Specialized Housing.
A Canadian project is among the 2018 AIA Housing Award winners, with a Gooderham, Ontario residence known as The Bear Stand featured among the winners. Designed by the distinguished American practice of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, the private residence is a 3,245 square foot property located some 200 kilometres northeast of Toronto. Characterized by a variety of interior wood finishes, the extensively glazed home also features ample natural light, making for a comfortable ambiance that takes full advantage of the rich natural surroundings. A double-height living room is also accented by a locally sourced granite fireplace, which serves a material focal point for the residence.
