Eighteen new supertall skyscrapers were completed in 2018, the highest number ever in a single year, with China continuing to dominate the tall building charts.
China led the race for the skies, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) annual report revealed, accounting for 11 of the completed supertalls ? skyscrapers over 300 metres high ? last year.

Of the 143 buildings over 200 metres high completed in 2018, the CTBUH calculated, 88 were in China. It was a record-breaking year for the country, which built 86 tall buildings in 2016, and 80 in 2017.
Shenzhen alone had 14 new tall buildings, accounting for nearly 10 per cent of the total worldwide. The United States had the second highest number per country, with 13 new buildings over 200 metres.
Beijing has the tallest new skyscraper, the 528-metre-high CITIC Tower by Kohn Pederson Fox (KPF). Also called the China Zu, it's now the the ninth tallest building the world.
Other notable tall buildings completed in 2018 are Roger Stirk Harbour + Partner's Three World Trade Centre in New York and KPF's China Resources tower in Shezhen.
"Given the rate of urbanisation seen in the world ? and that we must build the equivalent of a new city of one million people every week to accommodate this growth ? it is not surprising that the pace of tall building construction continues," said CTBUH chief Antony Wood.
