Renovating a Classic Colonial – Michael Smith Architects
As with many of his designs, Michael Smith was inspired by New England coastal architecture when he renovated this 1910 residence. ?The house had fallen into a dilapidated state, and the family wanted to restore the living space to what it used to be, with the addition of many modern features common today,? said Smith.
These features include a large, open living space and kitchen, complete with custom interior features. The client, a young family, was relocating from New York City and wanted to maintain the historic nature of the house. ?They didn?t want a big, new house with a great deal of space they didn?t need, but wanted to modernize,? Smith continued. He and his team created a feeling of openness and light with the addition of windows, custom interior features, and the whites, blues, and grays common in New England coastal designs.

?One of the challenges was the grade of the property, which dropped off severely from front to back,? Smith explained. ?We had to reconcile this with the living space to maintain a feeling of connectedness with the yard.? Smith was pleased with the end result. ?The clients were great to work with,? he said, ?and the renovation turned out really well.?
