Sand in Taufers Firehouse
Pedevilla Architects has designed a new landmark for the small town of Sand in Taufers in Northern Italy. A bright yellow firehouse is placed at the foot of the Alps, creating a playful and unique marker for this modest community.
Firehouses by nature must first and foremost be functional. Pedevilla Architect’s building is no exception: their firehouse was designed with utility in mind. The ground floor is dedicated to the fire vehicles, which move easily in and out thanks to an elegant garage door which opens, accordion-style, to the street. Smaller rooms throughout the station allow for equipment storage and maintenance, as well as sleeping and changing areas for the crew.
The short and rectangular building is constructed of reinforced concrete and finished with a rough façade. Accents of metal trim line the doors and windows, all finished in that intriguing yellow hue. On the interior, the yellow shade continues on the painted walls, while polished concrete floors provide a practical and modern solution for the fire station’s heavy use. Long tubes of light are installed like a runway along the ceiling in the vehicle room, a simple addition that adds big style to this space. The firehouse’s golden yellow façade, set against the town’s backdrop of snow and rock, makes for a dramatic picture. It’s no wonder that this station is a beloved monument of Sand in Taufers.
