?We?ve created an aesthetic that is based on the learned lessons of the traditional tropical architecture.?

The Smith Residence in the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica for the Smith family has become an example of how contemporary architecture can learn from common sense principles.

Based on simple ideas for evacuating and collecting rain water, temperature control through cross ventilation, and large overhangs; the architects have created an aesthetic that is based in the lessons learned by traditional tropical architecture of the Caribbean.
Using local manual labor and sourcing only certified materials, the architects have not only created a sanctuary for this family but also proven that using passive temperature control measures through intelligent design can help do without any air conditioning and in the long run save money and be responsible with our energy resources.
