Doryong-dong, where this building is located, is also an area where the Daejeon Expo was held in 1993, and Daedeok Research Complex, Korea’s representative science and technology complex, is located.
Over time, the current Expo site is being transformed into a large-scale complex, and with the reconstruction of nearby apartments, the existing commercial infrastructure is rapidly being updated.
The Steel Square building is located in a quiet housing complex where you can guess the traces of stagnant time on the side of the busy surrounding area. The architect’s willingness to demolish existing houses and create a new space between the commercial space in the North and the residential space in the South suggests the direction of the main building’s progress between the two axes of time.
First of all, in order to protect the privacy of family members in the surrounding environment where residential and commercial spaces are mixed, buffer zones (fronts, kitchens, pantry, and bathrooms) were installed on the road side and main living spaces were placed inside them.
