This house was commissioned by Kate Atchley, a keen beekeeper and interfaith minister. She searched for and found a south facing plot looking over the Teviot on the edge of a quiet village in the Scottish Borders, near Kelso.
Kate wanted three bedrooms, open plan living space, a studio for visitors and lots of work space including a study and shed. The house had to have a strong relationship with its garden, be as energy efficient as possible and have a low carbon footprint.
Zone Architects designed the house in the middle of the plot, with the kitchen facing south surrounded by garden. The studio for visitors has a small, private garden and entrance to the north. A straightforward volumetric shape was chosen for economy of build and this is kinked in the middle to follow the line of the lane and provide design interest.
The house is arranged to maximise its oneand-a-half storey volume with the stair offering spatial interest and windows carefully positioned to capture various views of nearby church, viaduct, the Teviot and hills beyond.
