Vancouver Firms Take Copper Awards

Two Vancouver projects are among the dozen projects honoured by the North American Copper in Architecture Awards. Sponsored by the Copper Development Association (CDA), the awards recognize the excellent use of copper in residential, educational and government buildings, built or renovated within the last three years in the United States or Canada.
St. Andrew’s Wesley United Church received a nod for its Seismic Upgrade and Heritage Conservation project, designed by the Vancouver office of Ryder Architecture. The 90-year-old Gothic Revival Church had suffered long-term roof leaks, prompting a large-scale restoration that highlighted copper as a featured element. Also in Vancouver, an Award of Excellence went to the 1912 Sun Tower Dome Envelope Seismic Stabilization, by Vancouver-based McGinn Engineering & Preservation and Winnipeg-based Sotirios Corp. The restoration included replacement of the deteriorated terracotta tiles, which had been painted to resemble patinated copper, with actual copper tiles.
