Virtual Talk and Tour of Former Residential School Tonight
Tonight (September 28) at 6pm EST, the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada (SSAC) will host a free virtual event in collaboration with the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre.
The online discussion will cover the architecture of residential schools and offer a virtual tour of the former Shingwauk Residential School, now located on the campus of Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Shingwauk was designated a National Historic Site in April 2021. Tonight?s event will offer an evening of reflection, education, and commemoration.
The event takes place in advance of Canada’s first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This new federal statutory holiday honours the lost children and Survivors of Canada’s residential school system, their families, and communities. It falls on September 30, which since 2013 has been observed as an Indigenous-led day of commemoration known as Orange Shirt Day. Information for zoom registration of this free event is available here.
