Winnipeg’s Warming Huts is calling for entries to its 10th annual competition for winter installations along the frozen Assiniboine and Red Rivers.
Submissions are due September 30, 2019  for designs for warming huts and art installations along the city’s skating trail. Three teams will be selected as winners, and their designs will be built by The Forks this winter. The winning teams will be invited to Winnipeg to help complete and install their projects, and to participate in activities celebrating the new huts (including a shinny game against local architects).
Conveying a sense of contemporary coziness, the fluorescent yellow Hygge House is a winning entry from the 2013 competition by Manitoba firms Plain Projects, URBANINK, and Pike Projects. Courtesy The Forks Weather in Winnipeg can be very cold, and teams are encouraged to consider the effects of sun, wind chill, and the shifting landscape of the snow-covered river. The ice during the installation can reach one meter in thickness.
The competition’s jury members include Kevin Loewen, Graham Hogan, Richard Kroeker, Clare MacKay, Sasa Radulovic, Bob Somers, Johanna Hurme, Michael Scatliff, Jim August, and Guy Maddin.

The organizers encourage the formation of multi-disciplinary teams. The call is open to architects, architecture students, landscape architects, interior designers, artists and industrial designers who have a proven portfolio of design work.
