Alternative White House Designs
With its pristine white porticos and hallowed oval office, The White House is one of the most famous buildings in the world, instantly recognised around the globe as the home of politics and power.
But it could have looked very different: the design of the White House was chosen in a prestigious public design competition, and the plans for some of these designs have until recently been publicly unavailable. The competition briefed designers to create a presidential mansion to rival the lavish palaces of Europe. The architects pulled out all the stops in order to have their vision for The White House built and their own spot in the history books cemented.
While James Hoban?s White House reigns supreme, HouseFresh set out to unearth the previously unseen competition entries, collaborating with The Maryland Center for History and Culture to create a series of digital renders, bringing the original designs to life.
