Winners announced for 2016 Great Places in Canada contest
The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) has announced the winners of its 2016 Great Places in Canada contest.
After a rigorous review process by a jury of certified planning professionals, the Institute bestowed the title of 2016 Great Street on Water Street (in St. Andrews, New Brunswick), 2016 Great Neighbourhood on Woodfield (in London, Ontario), and 2016 Great Public Space on St. Patrick?s Island (in Calgary, Alberta).
In August, CIP invited Canadians to nominate a place in their community for the Great Places in Canada contest. The panel of jurors reviewed the 37 Great Place submissions from across Canada against a criteria of planning best practices that considered social, economic, and accessibility and safety factors, and elements such as design, culture history and landscape. ?A great place is one where citizens can enjoy a healthy and inspiring environment,”said Eleanor Mohammed RPP, MCIP, President of the Canadian Institute of Planners. “All of the 2016 Great Places in Canada winners are demonstrative of what planners try to create: a space that is functional, safe, and enjoyable for the community.?Â
In addition to inviting the public to nominate a space, CIP conducted an online vote allowing the public to determine what place they think should win.
