Aurora Borealis by Laurentian University students
For the second straight year, the world of design will descend onto Toronto?s beaches in the middle of February to take in the debut of the winning Winter Stations installations. The international design competition, founded by RAW Design, Ferris + Associates and Curio, will reveal the built pieces on Family Day, Monday, February 15. The exhibition continues until March 18, 2016.
In addition to the seven winning installations, a fire pit designed by renowned Canadian architect Douglas Cardinal will also be unveiled. Sponsored by Diamante Development, the Beach Community Fire Place is designed to be a protective shield from the winds and a source of warmth for visitors. The screen?s Western Red Cedar is charred with fire to preserve the wood without requiring any preservatives, an ancient Japanese technique called Shou Sugi Ban. This marks the first time an acclaimed designer has been invited to participate in Winter Stations.   Of the seven installations on display, four are the product of the Winter Stations design competition, which garnered 378 submissions from 45 countries around the world. These winning designs will be joined by three student-led installations contributed by Ryerson, OCAD and Laurentian University.
