Nika proposes to elevate affordable homes above Sydney's roads
The latest instalment of our Dezeen x MINI Living video series explores a proposal to construct elevated rows of affordable housing on bridges above Sydney's streets.
The plan by a team from architecture and engineering firm Nika proposes to traverse urban roads with bridges containing a row of single-storey housing units topped with a linear public park.
Led by Nika's vice president of architecture and engineering Tae Jung, the team developed the Bridging Affordable Housing plan for a competition seeking innovative affordable housing proposals for the Australian city.
The series of bridges would be raised 4.2 metres above the road in order to allow traffic to pass underneath. The structures would be angled to cross roads diagonally rather than perpendicularly, allowing for longer structures that could each accommodate eight homes.
