In Memory of Roger Taillibert 1926-2019
Architect Roger Taillibert, the master builder of Montréal?s Olympic park facilities, passed away on October 3rd in his Parisian home at the age of 93.
Taillibert?s work includes the Parc des Princes in Paris, the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, and the Villeneuve-D?Ascq Sports Complex. Throughout his career, he worked on refining the architectural expression of sport through grand architectural gestures.
In Montréal, his Olympic stadium and tower have become a preeminent symbol of the city. They are considered an iconic element of the city?s skyline and of its contemporary architecture heritage.
Despite the tumultuous history surrounding the construction of Montréal?s Olympic installations and the bittersweet relationship Taillibert has maintained with Québec, Taillibert has always been fond of Québeckers, praising on many occasions the expertise of the workers who worked directly or indirectly on the construction of the Olympic Stadium. The architect maintained a summer residence in the Laurentians, a region he particularly loved since the early 1970s. ?Roger Taillibert was an endearing man. An architect, but even more so, an artist,? says Michel Labrecque, president and general manager of the Montréal Olympic park. ?His architectural work, spanning fifty years of history and three continents, is a testament to intelligence and mastery.?
