Workstead launches new lighting collection at Philip Johnson's Glass House
New York design studio Workstead has displayed a series of light fixtures influenced by forms used by modernist architect Philip Johnson inside his Glass House in Connecticut.
Archetype by Workstead was displayed inside the Glass House because its forms and textures reference the modern style of the propertyÂ
The new series called Archetype presents three geometric shapes, Vault, Gable and Block, with each realised as sconce, pendant and floor lamp.
Workstead debuted the collection inside Johnson's Modernist residence, which he built for himself in New Canaan, Connecticut in 1949, for a day-long display this week. The studio chose the location because it referenced the work of Johnson, and his modernist contemporaries including Mies Van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, for the series. Among the design is gable pendant, which mimics the appearance of an artwork stand featured in the Glass House's living room
"With Archetype, we were inspired to create a lighting collection through an architect's lens," said Robert Highsmith, co-founder of Workstead. "I love the idea that Johnson and other modernists were approaching a lighting fixture as they would a building."
"Our fixtures embody the same architectural references and proportions ? a structure that is fundamentally refined and functional," Highsmith added.
Gable pendant was formed using two triangular pieces of brass, and was hanged over Johnson's bar counter
