Artistic Tunnel Transformation by MAD Architects
MAD Architects is a Chinese architecture cabinet founded in 2004 by Ma Yansong, whose primary goal is to “create emotion and various feelings” when someone approaches one of their buildings. The architects recently completed the restoration of the Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel in Japan, a 750-meter historical surveillance tunnel, in which several permanent art spaces have been developed to promote the cultural aspect of the region.
Indeed, this region has long suffered from an aging population, and therefore declining, pushing young workers to settle in the big cities to find a job. This restoration also aims to bring man closer to nature, the gorges being located in the middle of the mountains. The installations will be divided into five parts, recalling the five elements of nature. This artistic transformation operated in this “tunnel of light” makes it possible to put poetic spaces at the disposal of the public, thus weaving the link between art, nature and human.
