Architect Jerome Markson passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2023.
Markson was a Canadian-born architect based in Toronto, Ontario, best known for his multi-family urban housing projects including Alexandra Park Public Housing. Markson began his architectural studies at the University of Toronto and began his career in the 1950s, working for architects including Eugene G. Faludi, James Murray, George Robb, and Venchiarutti & Venchiarutti. In 1955, he opened his practice in post-WWII Toronto and worked independently under the name Jerome Markson Architect for most of his career.Â
“Markson has spent his career creating […] works of architecture […]Â inscribed within their contexts, imbued with a masterful level of craft and character, and conceived foremost as settings for human interaction,” wrote Laura Miller, in a commemorative text on Markson when he won the RAIC Gold Medal in 2022. “His practice of nearly 60 years can only be described as omnivorous, embracing a wide range of building types and programs, from single family homes, to multi-family housing, to housing for the aged, to cultural and religious buildings, to medical and office buildings?even post-office prototypes, and yes, a floating cottage.
